Country Flair Hobby & Craft Competiton

Country Flair is our Hobby & Craft Competition, showcasing the talents of local people on the Sunday of Colne Engaine Festival.

We have a range of categories, allowing for more unusual skills to be presented alongside those seen more often. We are looking forward to seeing what you ‘Crafty’ folk can produce!

  • Entry:

    • Entries from anyone living within a 5 mile radius of Colne Engaine will be accepted.
    • There will be a small fee of 50p per entry for adults and one entry fee of 50p per child.
    • Entry form (along with the relevant entry fees) should be placed in an envelope marked ‘Country Flair’ and delivered to The Colne Engaine Village Shop or 14a Brook Street, Colne Engaine CO6 2EU. Please submit entries as soon as possible.
  • Delivery & collection of exhibits:
    • Exhibits must be delivered to the marquee on the lower recreation ground between 7:30 and 10am on Sunday 3rd June.
    • If it is difficult to deliver your item at this time a collection service can be provided by pre-arrangement. Please contact : 01787 220342.
    • All exhibits must be collected from the marquee between 4:30pm and 5:30pm after the exhibition.
  • Judging:
    • All entrants will be given an entry number on the day as entrant’s name cannot be visible during the judging process.
    • All exhibits will be judged by specialists in each category and the judges decisions are final (Judges may leave comments on entries this year).
    • Entrants’ names will be displayed to the public after the judging has taken place.
  • Prizes: 
    • Prize giving will be at 2:30pm
    • There will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize Rosette awards for each section.
    • The top scoring entry (judged on points) in each category (i.e. food and drink, photography, craft, children) will win a Gold Rosette and £20.
    • There will be a Best in Show award of a Rosette and £20.

Food & Drink Categories

Section 1 – Homemade drink – non-alcoholic
The drink may be any homemade recipe. Bring in any receptacle (bottle, jug etc) with a glass for tasting and present on any type of mat. The drink will be tasted by the judges so should not be sealed.

Section 2 – Homemade drink – Alcoholic
The drink may be any homemade recipe or enhanced alcohol such as sloe Gin. Bring in any receptacle (bottle, jug etc) with a glass for tasting and present on any type of mat. The drink will be tasted by the judges so should not be sealed.

Section 3 – Preserve: Sweet
Present with lid. Preserve will be tasted by judges.

Section 4 – Preserve: Savoury
Present with lid. Preserve will be tasted by judges.

Section 5 – Carrot cake
Any recipe: Please present the cake whole, the cake will be sliced and tasted by the judges.

Section 6 – Decorated cupcakes
This section will be judged on appearance only and will not be tasted. Please present a minimum of 3 cupcakes on a paper or china plate.

Section 7 – Flapjacks
Any recipe: please present 4 even slices on a paper or china plate.

Section 8 – Fudge
Any recipe or flavour: please present 8 cubes of even size.

Section 9 – Homemade quiche
Any recipe: please present whole, the quiche will be sliced and tasted by the judges.

Section 10 – Gentleman’s section: Sensational Sausage Selection
3 items made from sausages/sausage meat. Let your imagination run wild. Present in any way you like.


Colne Engaine Picnic Pie Off!

A multi-layered, fully enclosed pie that is luxurious and super tasty – The ultimate of pies for a picnic! Think lunch in a slice.
Your pie entry can be of any size, but must have at least 5 defined layers of which two should be vegetable or fruit.
It should be completely enclosed by a pastry of your choice, plain or decorated and presented on a plate, mat or board.
Your pie will be judged on its appearance, taste, definition of layers and combination of ingredients.

A photo or set of photos (maximum of 4) mounted onto a card measuring a maximum of 40cm x 50cm (16” x 20”) to fulfil the following briefs:

Crafts Category

Section 1 – Knitting and Crochet
Any item or garment knitted or crocheted such as blankets toys, clothing. Please present large garment neatly folded.

Section 2 – Jewellery
A piece or set of handmade jewellery including; necklaces, bracelets, earrings or broaches.  These can be made using any material – you may be able to use your felting, glasswork or even woodwork skills to create a delicate masterpiece.

Section 3 – Country Garden flower arrangement
An arrangement of country garden foliage and flowers – display in any container.

Section 4 – Wall Art
You may enter artwork in any medium e.g. sketches, pen and ink, watercolours, acrylics, oils.  Maximum size of 70cm x 50cm

Section 5 – Woodwork
A handcrafted wooden item of any size – big or small

Section 6 – Upcyling
An upcycled item that has been repurposed or re-vamped, please provide a before photograph if possible.

Section 7 – Any Craft
Any handmade craft item that is not included in other sections – this can be absolutely anything that you think we might like to see.

Parent and Baby (0-2)

  • Handprint or Footprint art
    A picture, painting or collage using baby’s hand/footprint.

Toddler (2-4)

Section 1: Hand print or footprint art
Create a picture or collage together using your toddlers hand/footprint.

Section 2: Paper Plate art
Your toddler could decorate a paper plate or even turn it into something.


Age groups judged: 5-7 years, 8-10 years and 11-14 years
Each age group has a different set of activities, please check the age groups specified.

Section 1: Photography (5-7) (8-10) (11-14)
A photo mounted on card and titled – ‘A Great Day’

Section 2: Cupcake decoration (5-7) (8-10) (11-14)
A minimum of 2 cupcakes judged on appearance only.

Section 3: Stone art (5-7) (8-10)(11-14)
Find and decorate the perfect stone using paints.

Section 4: Vegetable superhero (5-7)(8-10)
Use any fruits and/or vegetables to make a spectacular superhero.

Section 5:  Hat (5-7)
Use any materials; card, paper, fabric etc to make a decorated hat.

Section 6: Birdhouse (8-10) (11-14)
Use any materials to make/build a birdhouse.

Section 7: Traybake (11-14)
Any recipe. Please cut and present 3 pieces on a china or paper plate.

The Festival takes place every two years at Colne Engaine Recreation Ground, 1 Station Rd, Near Colchester, Essex CO6 2ES
